An Environmental Policy is the requirement of any formalised Environmental Management System (EMS). The policy needs to be established by Senior Management and approved by them prior to being issued.

It is important that the Environmental Policy is appropriate to the the size of the company and the nature of their operations. When developing the policy, the environmental impacts of an organisations activities, products and services it needs to be considered.

The Environmental Policy need to include commitment to protection of the environment and prevention of pollution. Other commitments can include use of sustainable resources, mitigation of organisational risks related to climate change and protection of ecosystems.

As part of developing the policy, the organisations environmental aspects need to be considered, as well as any relevant environmental compliance obligations. It needs to be aligned with the organisation strategy for environmental management and enhance environmental performance.

The Environmental Policy is typically about one A4 page in length and good practice includes having the policy signed and dated.

Another aspect of the policy is, that it is used to communicate the organisations commitments to the environment to its employees, customers, clients and other interested parties.

A lot of organisations add their Environmental Policy to their website and communicate it internally through employee inductions, internal briefings and on notice boards.

If an organisation has implemented an Environmental Management System (EMS) that need to be certified to ISO 14001, then they are required to have a documented Environmental Policy.

This policy can be purchased individually or as part of a package. If you are implementing a management system based on one or more of the main ISO standards, then our management system packages might be more cost effective.

Our standard management system packages cover a combination of ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 27001 and ISO 45001. However, additional standards can easily be included if needed.
